Objective
Scope for improvement in the collapse mode and performance of box structures by the use of honeycomb or foam fillings of various types will be examined. The use of rigidised composites and inserted stiffeners will also be appraised. This will allow the development of extra lightweight structures, which would assist in maintaining the competitiveness of sheet steel particularly for automotive applications. A detailed theoretical examination of the collapse mechanism of both adhesive bonded and welded flanges of box sections will be carried out to enable more effective predictive models to be developed.
