Fatigue behaviour of orthotropic slabs

Objective

This programme represents the French contribution to the third phase of the research proposed by the Working Party on the "Fatigue Strength of Bridges". The programme will be executed in the following stages: - study of the static-load behaviour of two structural features of orthotropic slabs, namely the sheet metal-trough and the trough-girder connections; - optimisation of the geometry of and manufacturing procedure for these structural features with a view to improving their fatigue strength; - determination of the laws of damage under constant-amplitude loads (fatigue tests on typical assemblies); - modelling and calculation of the useful life of these structural features, due account being taken of incipient cracks and crack propagation resulting in irreparable damage to the structure.

These activities form part of a joint programme involving collaboration with the LBF, Darmstadt, the Universities of Liège and Pisa, the Technical University in Delft and the Transport Road Research Laboratory, Crowthorne.
