Fatigue resistance of laser-treated structural steels

Objective

Surface treatment is being continuously developed to cut cost and weight. Of these treatments the high power laser appears potentially interesting since the radiation is emitted into the atmosphere and enables on-line treatment to be carried out as well as local treatment on large pieces to be effected. It has been shown that surface treatment by laser on a wide range of steels can result in: - heterogeneity of the treated layer resulting from the rapidity of the treatment and the heterogeneity existing beforehand in the material; - the existence of a field or residual compression stresses at the surface and intense tensile stresses in the sub-cutaneous layer, which is why the optimisation of the laser treatment is required. This study is aimed at supplying the data required to enable a selection to be make of the optimum conditions for the use of laser surface treatment, taking account of the following aspects: - mechanical fatigue under a high number of cycles on notched samples - contact fatigue - roller fatigue - abrasion and wear.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
