Objective
At the end of the first and second phase of the joint research appears an urgent need to study the fatigue resistance of component parts of steel orthotropic decks at low stress range levels. The orthotropic steel deck is the element most liable to have fatigue problems, for it is submitted to the direct action of the traffic wheels and thus to the highest stress variations and a great number of cycles. The design and maintenance of the joint details represents a considerable amount of the costs of the bridge. The research will be organized as follows: - Fatigue strength of field splices in stiffeners of the orthotropic deck plate - Fatigue strength of stiffener to cross beam connection of the orthotropic deck plate - Recommendations for the fatigue calculation of bridge details These activities form part of a joint programme involving collaboration with the LBF, Darmstadt, the Universities of Liège and Pisa, the Laboratoire des Ponts et Chaussées, Paris, and the Transport Road Research Laboratory, Crowthorne.

Topic(s)
Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
