Toughness, YS/UTS ratio and fracture behaviour of structural steels

Objective

High-strength structural steels are characterized by a moderate YS/UTS ratio. Certain production processes, such as accelerated cooling, make it possible to obtain a steel with good weldability and high toughness properties. In view of the originality of the results of research conducted previously in the ECSC context and the keen interest they have aroused in industry, the proposed research is aimed at gathering further information in the field with a view to utilizing high-strength steels. To that end, the proposed concept, which involves predicting the fracture behaviour in the presence of a defect on the basis of typical properties determined systematically by the steel-maker, will be generalized in a wider framework. Attempts will be make to improve the method of forecasting critical defects using the Charpy V-notch impact strength and to extend its scope to tempered and self-hardened steels (with non-uniform structure) and welded assemblies. The possibility of extending these new concepts for the purpose of forecasting critical defects determined according to criteria other than that of generalized plastification will also be examined. The research will focus on structural steels or steels for high-strength tubes.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
