Objective The choice and correct use of steels for service under such difficult conditions as those encountered during the boring and operation of geothermal and oil wells, characterized by a high CO2 concentration, necessitates an analysis of corrosion, stress corrosion and fatigue-corrosion in environments typical - as regards composition, temperature and pressure - of these wells and of the relevant mechanism in play. It should also be stressed that the aggressive and combine action of CO2, chlorides and H2S, synergised by the high environmental temperatures, causes the formation of complex surface films (carbonates, oxides, and sulphides), via complex catalytic mechanisms. These films can greatly modify the behaviour of the steels, so their formation and effect must be properly analysed.
