Objective
THE PROJECT CONCERNS THE STUDY OF JOINT BEHAVIOUR IN LARGE OFFSHORE STRUCTURES FOR USE IN DEEP SEAS AND-OR ARCTIC CLIMATES WHERE THERE IS AN OBVIOUS NEED FOR ADVANCED MATERIALS, I.E. HIGHER-STRENGTH STEELS RS 350 MPA, BETTER WELDABILITY AND OPTIMUM BRITTLE-FRACTURE RESISTANCE IN THE WELDED-JOINT HAZ.
THESE WELL-DEFINED PROBLEMS CURRENTLY CONCERN FRACTURE TOUGHNESS UNDER STATIC LOADS AT LOW TEMPERATURES AND THE FATIGUE BEHAVIOUR UNDER RANDOM LOADS OF LARGE WELDED TUBULAR JOINTS. IT IS AIMED IN THIS PROJECT TO CONTRIBUTE TO THEIR SOLUTION.
IT IS PLANNED TO CARRY OUT LABORATORY TESTS AND TESTS ON FULL-SCALE JOINTS UNDER CONDITIONS MATCHING THE SEVERITY (LOW TEMPERATURE) AND-OR ATTACKING CONDITIONS (SEA WATER + CATHODE PROTECTION) OF THE ENVIRONMENT IN WHICH THE REAL STRUCTURES ARE USED, AND REPRODUCING THE LOAD APPLICATION PROCEDURES (E.G. VARIABLE IN TIME).
FOUR MATERIALS WITH YIELDS TENSIONS OF 350 RS (MPA) 480 WILL BE USED, BEING OBTAINED BY MEANS OF HEAT AND THERMOMECHANICAL TREATMENTS DIFFERENT FROM THE USUAL NORMALIZATION PROCESS (CONTROLLED ROLLING, ACCELERATED COOLING, NORMALIZATION AND TEMPERING.
FULL-SCALE TESTS WILL BE CARRIED OUT IN A NUMBER OF LABORATORIES IN ORDER TO EXPLOIT TO THE FULL THE TESTING POTENTIAL AVAILABLE ON VARIOUS GEOMETRIES AND-OR UNDER DIFFERENT STRESS CONDITIONS.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
