Lower cost steels for high strength

Objective

The production of cold formed high strength fasteners with yield strengths greater than 600 N/mm² currently necessitates a hardening and tempering operation being carried out on the formed component. Significant cost savings would be achieved if this heat treatment could be eliminated and, in principle, this would be possible by the development of an initial bar or rod microstructure which could be strengthened by a combination of drawing and cold forming, with the final properties produced by a low temperature stress relief operation. Whilst this approach has already been considered for a limited range of steel types and component shapes in both Japan and Europe, there is urgent need for a systematic study to establish the optimum composition and microstructure for a given component strength level in various size ranges. The behaviour of the final product also requires assessment to demonstrate that the bolt properties obtained without heat treatment are acceptable.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
