H2S fracture due to residual stresses in pipeline steel

Objective

The aim of this project is to assess the effect of residual stresses on sulphur stress corrosion cracking. Laboratory corrosion tests as well as tests on full size formed and welded pipes up to 36" x 1" and components for "sour" service will be carried out. Previous ECSC research has indicated clearly that residual stresses may promote SSCC in seam welds. This information is of paramount importance to the oil and gas industry.
