Objective
The overall objective of this project is to investigate the effects of continuous casting process variables on surface and sub-surface defects in billets on different steel plants and, using the data collected, adapt casting conditions to improve surface quality. This will be assisted by the use of instrumented moulds and on-line billet inspection techniques to be developed during the project. The plant trials will be supported by physical and numerical modelling of flow into the mould and numerical modelling of heat transfer assisted by industrial data and billet samples.
