Objective
The project aims to evaluate an approach for production of high strength steel sheet that is different from those currently in use, e.g. rephosphorised microalloyed, dial- or multi-phase, TRIP-steels. The principle of this development is to retain as much as possible of the hardening due to cold rolling while gaining ductility through controlled low temperature heat treatment (back-annealing) through recovery and/or partial recrystallisation. Unlike other processes for achieving high strength, this offers the possibility of cost-effective high-speed production on continuous annealing lines. Targets for strength and ductility are specified. The work concerns principally low carbon steels but some austenitic stainless steels are also to be included. An important aspect is to evaluate methods for continuous on-line control for ensuring consistency of properties in the product.
