Objective
The aim of the project is to evaluate the role of steel composition welding parameters and post welding treatments in the improvement of fatigue behaviour of high strength welded rails, with particular regards to both pearlitic (head hardened and as-rolled) and bainitic high grade rails. Using these rails the weld joint will be performed by THERMIT and flash butt welding methods. There are two specific aims of the project: Firstly to quantify the role of heat affected zone microstructures, strength and toughness in the fatigue behaviour of the high grade rail welded joints, and secondly, which also is expected to result in a good softening resistance of the heat affected zone, to improve the in-service fatigue behaviour of welded rails by an optimisation of base material chemical composition, welding parameters and post welding treatments. Laboratory test on welded joints are planned and will be carried out using both current industrial high rail steels and laboratory experimental rail steels.
