Objective
The overall goal of the project is to find an effective and environmentally friendly passivation method for hot dip galvanised sheet steels. The main objective is to evaluate novel passivation methods with multi-purpose functions to substitute oiling, chromating and/or sealing processes for temporary corrosion protection of HDG steel, and to study the compatibility of the passivation methods with typical manufacturing processes of sheet metal components and coil-coated steel. The novel passivation methods investigated include ultra-violet cured thin organic coatings and passivation layers applied by chemical vapour deposition techniques in addition to thermally cured thin organic coatings. Elimination of chromating and/or oiling will decrease the amount of harmful wastes and thus helps to decrease the environmental load.
