Objective
Previous research on the fatigue strength of joints between hollow sections has been confined to connections in a single plane. The aim of this project is to extend the scope of such work to cover multi-planar connections such as those used in bridges, cranes, conveyors and masts. The project is broken down into two phases: - Determination of the fatigue strength of unreinforced welded multi-planar connections between tubular and rectangular hollow sections; - Reinforcement of ordinary and multi-planar hollow section connections in need of repair and the investigation of the effects of such measures on the fatigue strength.
