Objective
The aim of the research is to demonstrate the excellent seismic behaviour of a composite structure while ensuring good fire resistance. At present almost no data are available on the seismic behaviour of composite structures with the exception of a few Japanese papers, which generally have not been translated or published in the West. Japanese contractors have resistance to earthquakes as their reason for choosing a composite structure (beams encased in concrete). The seismic intensity up to which existing assemblies can be used will be investigated. Beyond that it will be necessary to develop new types of more rigid joints and only those exhibiting the best behaviour will be selected and modelled. After evaluation of all these data the final aim will be to introduce this new know-how into Eurocode 8, which for lack of data does not explicitly cover the earthquake resistance of composite structures.
