Development of design rules for unprotected steel struc tures subjected to realistic fires in enclosed car parks

Objective

This project is aimed at demonstrating that the present standards of fire resistance requirements for enclosed car parks are too conservative, with regard to the actual thermal conditions produced by car fire, and at proposing changes of regulations to relate to fire curves such as R30 or R60 instead of R90 or even R240. Numerical simulations of spatial temperatures distributions shall be associated with realistic thermomechanical simulations and shall lead to conclusions which will improve the competitivity of steel in such structural applications.
