The connection between test results found in the laboratory on volume stability and the values found in practice for LDslags

Objective

In evaluating LD-slags in road building, the test methods with relation to volume strength and the stresses on bituminous and non-combined top layers need to be compared. Test methods for evaluating the volume strength of LD-slags have been developed in Belgium, Germany and Britain with ECSC aid. These methods provide comparative values, which are obtained under laboratory conditions and cannot be translated into practice. An examination will be made of the connection between the test results found in the laboratory and those found in practice. The comparison between laboratory and practice requires an assessment of the increase in volume and in analysis of the hydration processes in the laboratory and in particular under actual road-building conditions. The research programme is split into two parts, which will be carried out in Belgium, France, Britain and Germany. There will, however, be no independent contribution from Belgium.
