The recovery of metal from stainless steelmaking dust by plasma smelting

Objective

The aim of the project is the construction of a pilot plant intended to recover the metallic oxides contained in the dusts of electric arc furnaces and AOD furnaces producing stainless steels at the BSC stainless steel works in Sheffield by using a plasma melting facility. The recuperation of valuable elements such as Cr, Ni and Mo would permit a benefit of 62 pounds sterling/t and a pay back time of 3-4 years for treatment of 8,000 t/year of dust. This solution would also resolve the problem of eliminating the hexavalent Cr contained in these dusts. The valorisation of secondary dusts for their Zn and Pb content is also envisaged. The principal risk of the project and its demonstration function reside principally in the success of the 6,500 amp plasma torch working in an aggressive metal/slag environment. A request is being made to the ECSC industrial health and safety programme for a complementary aid of 5 % of the proposed total budget.
