Objective
This project is based on the results obtained during research carried out in the laboratory and at the pre-industrial stage with financial aid from the ECSC (contracts N° 7210-MA/310 and 7210-MA/312). For this reason, and to ensure continuity in the work, the starting date requested for this project is 01.07.1986. The end result of the project should be the introduction onto the magnetic materials market of a completely new grade of non-oriented electrical sheet. The new material should enable the electrical industry to make considerable energy savings by improving the yield of the machines as a result of a considerable improvement in magnetic permeability, reduced anisotropy and lower losses. To produce a grade of steel with very precise residual element levels certain preconditions are required: - pre-treatment of the pig iron, - slag desulphurization, - particular refractory brick properties, - nitride removal, - continuous casting, - rolling schedule.
Optimisation of the above factors is the aim of the first phase of the project. In a second phase, the aim would be to make low tonnage melts to verify the feasibility of the above plan and to develop subsequent heat treatment to reproduce the properties obtained at the research stage. Finally, in a third phase, at least two full industrial-scale melts will be carried out, from refining to finished product, so as to prove the technical reliability of the plant and the and the commercial interest of the new material.
