Objective
This proposal concerns the 4th phase of the pilot and demonstration project for production of drink can lids. In the past phases a steel lid of 63 mm diameter was successfully developed up to the production stage. More recently, the aluminium industry has introduced a new but smaller lid of 57 mm, which is economically more attractive. This has reduced the commercial advantage of using steel and in order to complete with this new development additional work is now required. This phase will be concerned with devising the appropriate technology to produce a smaller steel lid so that an all-steel beverage may be competitive in the market place.
