Objective
The primary objective of the proposed work is the improvement of methane capture in order to allow higher production and productivity in underground workings, and to allow greater use of methane utilisation schemes, thus reducing the total volume of emissions to atmosphere.
The division of the work programme is influenced by the local mining conditions, the state of the art relative to practical methane drainage and the research work previously carried out.
Part of the co-ordination task will consist of facilitating circulation of information and diffusion of results among the different partners.
The project has the following aims :
- development of a general model of face emission;
- modelling of methane and air circulation in the goaf;
- examination of the viability of seam pre-drainage and the utilisation of existing drainage techniques in sub-level caving faces;
- development and or improvement of performance techniques for drilling drainage boreholes of large diameter and length parallel to the mined seam;
- improvement of gas and airflow measuring techniques by means of multicomponent analysis;
- enhanced quantities and purities of methane capture to enable significant increases in methane utilisation.
