Improving productivity by reducing explosion risks in special mining conditions

Objectif

The collaborative project is focused on explosion prevention and control, using different types of water dispensers, in situations where existing technologies cannot be used for different reasons, and which are, therefore, causing serious practical problems that generate losses in production.

Descriptions of the individual parts of the project are given. below. These have several important aspects in common :

- the study of early stages in development of explosions;

- the analysis of water dispersion characteristics of different types of dispensers;

- the tests under laboratory and/or - mining-like conditions.

Close collaboration and exchange of information and experience are planned in the project.

System for confining explosions in sub-level caving (AITEMIN)

The aim of this sub-project is to develop and test a low cost explosion confinement system based on a pressurised water screen applied to the stope entry that will be activated a few seconds before each blasting operation. This method will be able to confine at the stope and extinguish at an early stage the possible fires produced when blasting the coal roof.

- study of the characteristics of the explosion. Modelling;

- design development and construction of a prototype confinement system;

- tests on the surface;

- underground tests in controlled conditions;

- validation of the prototype.

Triggered barriers in special situations (HBL)

The aims of the project are :

- to test the dispersion capacity and behaviour of the new generation of triggered barriers (Belgian type) especially where the high temperatures found underground affect the operation of these barriers;

- in the rectangular roadways determination of the position of the triggering and water spreading units so that they run no risk of being pulled off by shuttle cars while ensuring an effective water dispersion over the whole roadway section

- validation tests of the water dispersion in three selected configurations in a rectangular roadway (6 m x 2,20 m) in the Provence area ;

- testing of the efficiency of the best configurations for explosion arrest in real conditions. This test will be carried out in the American Lake Lynn mine in a similar roadway (6 m x 2 m).

Frictional ignition control on continuous miners (IMCL)

In the UK. all continuous miners are fitted with a system for local ventilation of the cutting zone for frictional ignition prevention. However the coal cutting capacity of a continuous miner is so high that sometimes the methane produced during the cutting cycle may mot be sufficiently diluted by the local ventilation system. Traditionally, in Europe and elsewhere, the main method of reducing ignition probability, apart from the ventilation, has been to apply water to the back of the pick to cool the hot particles which cause an explosive mixture to ignite, but it is not feasible to apply water to the picks on a continuous miner.

The aims of the project are therefore to study other means of reducing the probability of frictional ignition on continuous miners.

- study of the effects of air entrainment in ventilating the region around the cutting picks;

- improving the fundamental understanding of the precise effect of spray droplet size and velocity on the cooling of hot material;

- study of a spray system, at distance and using the venturi effect;

- development of an effective but practical system to reduce the probability of frictional ignitions on continuous miner type machines.

Programme(s)
