Objective
The impact of coaI mines on the noise environment has not been fuIIy investigated. There is thus a requirement to quantify it in order to meet the environmental respect. To this end, the use of suitable descriptors will be investigated to assess the impact of mine operations taking into account the unique character of these sites. The work will also provide valuable data for environmental audits of sites and for the development and refinement of environmental noise prediction and possible remedial schemes.
- to investigate the impact of British Coal sites on the noise environment
- to review descriptors for environmentaI noise in reIation to these sites, and to investigate the suitability of new descriptors
- to assess the contributions of low frequency and intermittent noise to the overall impact, and to develop guidelines for new plant layout so as to mitigate these
- to identify and fully characterise the sources of noise on British Coal sites for planning and prediction purposes.

Topic(s)
Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
