Objective
It is planned to study the application of modern technologies (e.g. micro- and radio wave or laser-induced plasmas) to the controlled gasification and activation of coal-derived materials with a view to developing a range of advanced, high value materials, such as :
- molecular sieves and activated carbons in fibrous and granular form for gas storage at low pressures and gas cleaning;
- modified carbon fibres for improved strength, corrosion and bonding in advanced composites;
- diamond-like thin coatings for application to steel surfaces for enhanced hardness and wear resistance of drills and cutting tools.
Other coal-based advanced materials will be identified and their advantages, markets and process requirements will be explored.
