Objective
Current ECSC sponsored work on the production of coal tar pitches, processed to have low carcinogen contents, have shown that these have high softening points (typically greater than 200° C). The Proposal is to examine processing techniques to allow such high softening point pitches to be used directly as binders for carbon products.
A variety of techniques will be examined In the laboratory using a normal petroleum coke aggregate with selected high softening point binders. Techniques examined will Include:
- dry mixing the coke fiIIer and binder and then sintering by hot pressing or resistance heating
- cool mixing the binder and filler in the presence of a small amount of aqueous adhesive to provide a temporary "Scaffold" for the forming process
- the use of small amounts of additive oils to conventional hot mixing
- the use of small amounts of thermosetting resins as air initial binder
- the use of thermoplastic materials such as waxes, scrap polymers etc. to provide a low melting point temporary bond.
Successfully formed products wiII then be baked a) by the normal bench electrode baking process and b) by baking the formed material whilst collecting the evolved volatiles for analysis. It is hoped that the work would enable higher binder contents to be employed with lower volatile emissions, resulting in significantly denser, less permeable products.

Topic(s)
Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
