Objective
Considerable success has been achieved in meeting stringent legislation on the emission of NOx from pf fired large plant by modifying burners, particularly by staging combustion. This has resulted in problems of poor burnout and an increase in carbon in ash losses particularly with lower ash coals. It is proposed to find ways of remedying this situation, to reduce the added expense generated by the problems mentioned. It has been noted that different rows of burners contribute differently to carbon loss, possibly due to residence time differences. Targeting finer coal to only some of the burners might enable further reduction in NOx but still keep carbon losses low and thus minimise milling and maintenance costs.
The programme proposed first models mathematically a large pf coal fired plant, both front and wall fired, to establish the contribution of each individual burner to the overall carbon loss. Mathematical modeling will then evaluate the options for improving unburned loss by selective changes to the coal size fed to single burners. This will be backed up by examining burnout of variously sized coals in a 20 kWt entrained flow reactor. A 500 kWt pilot scale single burner rig will also test the effect of particle size, fuel reactivity, primary zone residence time and stoichiometry on burnout and NOx levels and include sampling of flame solids.
