Periodic Reporting for period 2 - MADE IN SCIENCE (MADE IN SCIENCE) Reporting period: 2017-01-01 to 2017-11-30 Summary of the context and overall objectives of the project “MADE IN SCIENCE” is the trademark of research, which shows the strength of researchers’ job. The aim of the project is to communicate to societies the importance of the “production chain” of science in terms of quality, identity, creativity, security guarantee, trans-nationality, “Know-how” and responsibility.In its implementation “MADE IN SCIENCE” constitute a big challenge for researchers who will have to design and organize the activities of the NIGHT 2016 and 2017, alongside young students participating to the "Alternanza scuola lavoro" project aiming to effective training on the job. This approach certainly contributes to attract young people to enter a scientific or research career.“MADE IN SCIENCE” is coordinated by Frascati Scienza and is hosted in the research areas in Italy where more than 10.000 international researchers live: public and laboratories areas of the major Italian cities; the areas in Frascati/Roma where institutions ASI, CNR-ARTOV, ENEA, ESA-ESRIN, INGV, INAF, INFN are located; the national Research institutes CINECA, GARR, ISS,ISPRA; the Universities of Rome, Cagliari, Parma, Sassari and LUMSA. MADE IN SCIENCE involves more than 30 cities throughout Italy. During the night thehashtag #ERN17 reached 7 millions people;o Over 30 million people made aware of the European Researchers' Night and itsobjectives.o Offer of the activities as described in Annex I Part B to the grant Agreement, namely:o 385 activities (seminars, shows, hands-on activities, exhibitions, various performances, guided tours inside the labs and outside the research centres, workshops, books presentation, science shows, competitions and quizzes,multimedia activities, science games, European corner);o Involving 25 Italian cities, namely Ariccia, Bari, Cagliari, Carbonia, Cassino,Caserta, Catania, Cave, Cosenza, Ferrara, Frascati, Frosinone, Gorga, Isnello, Lecce, Milano, Monte Porzio Catone, Napoli, Palermo, Parma, Pavia, Roma, Sassari, Trieste, Viterbo;o Active involvement of 1.800 researchers, of whom:o 86 having benefitted from SMC;o 18 having benefitted form another EU support (FP 7,;HORIZON 2020);o Attendance of 59.500 visitors having taken part in the activities offered. Progress beyond the state of the art and expected potential impact (including the socio-economic impact and the wider societal implications of the project so far) o Collection, analysis and processing of 2.631 feedbacks based on questionnaires and face to face interviews namely (617 Ex-Ante, 1213 Ex-Post and 801 Kids);o Main conclusions:o Typology of visitors; balanced gender representation with a major femaleparticipation, significant representation of 40-49 years old (32%), majority of young people (10-39 years old) represent almost 58%, major participation in The most interviewees attended the event in Frascati (1.088) Rome (755), Milan (194) and Bari (79), 27 % high school and university, (Bachelor’s degree, 17.79%, and Master’s Degree, 26.55%);o Knowledge about the event: “Friends/Word of mouth” (28%), including “school/professors” among the other responses, and “Social network” (17,75%) and also the participation in previous editions (14,01%), website (13,36 %);o Overall positive feedback bout the events (activities, contacts with researchers, locations and venues, concrete organisation, scheduling) (91 %);o 52% newcomers;o Awareness about the importance of research for development through nearly allcollective interviewed ex-post (90%) both in Italy and Europe;o Research funding: inadequate in Italy for 86 %, adequate at EU level for 77 %;o Expectations of participants: better understand the researchers’ work (48,80%)and what research means (32,73%).o Event considered as useful to encourage the choice of young people to pursue acareer in science...
