Objective
The study will determine the ergonomics requirements for the safety systems in railway locomotives used within steel plants.
The requirements will be built-in to a prototype control-driver interface: and the study will go on to evaluate the new system with regard to its enhanced safety prospects.
Ways and Means to Achieve the Work
The study will proceed in three phases.
I. Critical analysis of existing safety systems
- Establishment of a check-list of the features of the existing systems.
- Detailed analysis of the tasks carried out by the driver.
II. Study of the influence of the human factor on the use of these systems
- Study of operational deficiencies.
- Assessment of driver opinion by means of an anonymous questionnaire to be completed individually and on which the questions will be grouped as follows:
A. General information.
B. Deficiencies of the present systems.
C. Suggested improvements.
III. Design of a new safety system
A. Setting out of requirements:
The specific requirements of these systems in the context of the steel industry will be based on the information gathered during Phase 2.
B. Suggested designs for a new system.
C. Construction of a prototype and practical application.
Due regard will be given to previous relevant work which has been undertaken in the Community's Coal and Steel Industries.
