Objective
The project will attempt to define the physical ergonomic properties of safety shoes and anti-slipping coatings for metallic floor surfaces in the mining industry with a view to minimising accidents through slipping and tripping.
1. The results obtained from the laboratory tests on the five models of safety shoe produced for the research project bear little similarity to the questionnaire results from the field tests underground.
2. The safety shoes were given generally favourable ratings after the practical wearing tests underground.
3. The gratings used in German coal mines are highly slip-resistant, and wherever smooth steel surfaces occur the slip-resistance can be improved by applying a corundum coating.
Ways and Means to Achieve the Work
The project will evaluate safety footwear currently used in mining by means of wearing tests and interviewing the wearers.
Comparative tests will be carried out with other footwear used in specialised walking situations (e.g. mountain climbing).
The possible improvements suggested by the tests will be identified.
The optimum design for a non slip safety shoe will be thus drawn up.
