Reduction of physical stress associated with laying tracks and pipes during drivage

Objective

The aim of the project will be the reduction of physical stress associated with laying tracks and pipes during drivage of main gates by developing a mechanical work aid which takes account of the various operational factors.

Ways and Means to Achieve the Work

The project will start with a systematic analysis of current working procedures, including organisational and technical aspects which are dependent on the drivage method being used. In order to identify stressful and hazardous situations, special attention will be given to investigating / analysing questions of posture, movement, key physiological stresses, environmental stresses and accident hazards.

The resulting findings will be used to draft solutions to the problems in the form of a catalogue of specifications, on the basis of which a suitable work aid will then be designed and developed. Trials including comparative stress and hazard studies will then be carried out to verify the effectiveness of the solution developed.

The following ergonomically recognised procedures will be used:

- heart-rate and body-temperature measurements

- energy expenditure measurements

- video-taping of movement sequences

- analysis of movement sequences by specially trained experts

- assessment of stress caused by lifting loads, using the NIOSH and Burandt methods

- determination of accident rates.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.
