Objective
The aim is to study and demonstrate what possibilities exist for neutralizing and desulphurizing iron-ore sintering fumes, especially those from the hot wind-boxes since they contain more pollutants.
The results obtained during this research, whether during phase A in filtering of during phase B in desulfurization, have shown the feasibility of purifying the sintering baking fumes with a bag filter combined with a dry or semi-dry neutralization reactor. The purification rates reached (less than 10 mg/m3N of dust, a desulfurization greater than 70%) make it possible to satisfy the foreseeable evolutions of European regulations. The processes tested would deserve, however, to be studied on a large industrial pilot in order to specify the functioning and dimensioning parameters and what will become of collected waste.
The research is the phase B of a work program concerning the purification of iron ore sintering windbox gas stream. Iron ore sintering is the main pollution emitter of an integrated iron and steelmaking plant. The probable evolution of statutory limits towards more restrictive values requires the study of other purification techniques than electrostatic precipitators traditionally used for dedusting the waste gases.
Phase A of the research concerned dedusting of windbox gas stream using a bag filter. A pilot was built and the feasibility of this technique was shown on the industrial level under the reserves that a periodic pre-coating of the bags was done. Phase B concerned the desulfurization of effluents by considering the whole windbox gas stream and also fumes from boxes the most emissive on SO2, located near the front of the flame.
The work can be divided into four major parts:
- choice of desulfurization techniques to be tested,
- tests on the whole windbox gas stream,
- tests on boxes the most emissive in SO2,
- discussion of obtained results.
