The control of emissions of sulphur compounds during the treatment of blast furnace slag

Objectif

The overall objective of the research is to develop improvements to the two methods of treating blast furnace slag which will reduce atmospheric emissions of sulphur compounds.

For slag granulation this will entail studies on the design and geometry of the granulating head and chamber to reduce emissions and prevent instability in the emissions collection system. The performance of the condensation system will also be enhanced. The research will be based on pilot scale studies and the subsequent optimisation of modifications at fullscale.

For open pit slag treatment the factors influencing the formation and emission of sulphur compounds will be studied and modified operational practices will be developed to reduce emissions. This may involve changes to the scheduling of pit activities and the addition of chemicals to the quenching water. It is planned to conduct the research at pilot scale and fullscale.
