Objective
A preliminary dimension design for an industrial process plant suitable to treat the oily sludges at the ILVA Steelworks in Taranto was drawn up on the basis of the results of this research.
The CSM research programme which will be carried out jointly with the Nuova Italsider plant in Taranto consists of laboratory and pilot-scale experiments of various systems for processing and treating oily sludge from the steelmaking cycle with a view to making this waste material suitable for re-incorporation into the production cycle.
The IRH research programme is designed to study chemical and physical treatment of the oily wastes from steelmaking processes and also of the same type of materials which have for some time been stored temporarily.
It is thus hoped not only to keep down the volume of wastes to be removed, but in particular also to render inert the oily residue obtained from the previously-mentioned treatment, priority being given to recovering the sites where such wastes have been stored.
The two projects are at the same time parallel and complementary, parallel in that they both purport to study chemical and physical treatment systems for the wastes in question, and complementary because one deals with the problem of recycling a specific type of oily waste (ie sludge) while the other examines the treatment of various oily steelmaking wastes with a view to making them suitable for final disposal in full respect of environmental protection measures.
The IRH and the CSM will therefore liaise closely (exchange of information, regular meetings, work on the same type of oily wastes).

Topic(s)
Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.
