Study of ways of treating dolomitic wastes from converter linings for use as acid neutralizers and soil improvers

Objective

This project deals with the reuse of dolomitic refractory wastes from the AOD converter lining in the steelmaking. The two aims are, on the one hand, the application of these wastes as liming material to correct the pH of acid soils and to contribute the calcium and magnesium contents; on the other hand the use as neutralizing materials of waste acids and precipitating of metals and fluorides in treatment plants of acids used in stainless steel processes.

The project will comprise the following work:

1. Determination of the structure and composition of the original dolomite bricks.

2. Determination of the structure and composition of the waste materials from the converter linings.

3. Laboratory tests of various types of heat treatment and mechanical comminution.

4. Chemical tests to optimize the rate of reaction of the material to acids and its ability to precipitate metals, reference being made to the industrial lime which is used at present.

5. Agronomic tests to assess the value of the product obtained as an agent for improving acid soils.

6. Economic evaluation.

7. Conclusions.
