Objective
The object of this research is to improve the investigation techniques used in sound-proofing studies. The work mainly concerned the development of on site techniques for the measurement of the acoustic coefficients of materials and continuing work already started during a preceding ECSC research project concerning acoustic intensimetry and modelling of noise propagation using the ray tracing method.
Concerning acoustic intensimetry and the ray tracing method, it may be considered that these techniques have become basic tools for sound-proofing studies. They have shown their pertinence for sound reduction in iron and steelmaking shops and the experience acquired now makes it possible to control these techniques well.
The results obtained with the pulsed method have shown that this tool has interesting characteristics for measuring the absorption and sound attenuation performances of materials. This method is, however, an experimental method. Validation and optimization work is still necessary to make this technique fully operational.
This work completes the investigations realized by the CEDIA concerning plant environment and they make it possible to have a set of high performance tools to treat sound-proofing studies.
Nuisance caused by excessive noise is still an important preoccupation in the iron and steelmaking industry. In spite of the progress made, there are still a large number of work posts subject to sound exposure levels greater than 90 dB(A). In this context, it is important to make acoustic studies reliable in order to improve the efficiency and profitability of sound-proofing actions.
The main items dealt with during this research will be aimed at improving our knowledge of noise sources and the acoustic characteristics of materials causing the propagation of noise in buildings by:
- improving the methodology for the study of noise sources in an industrial environment and setting up a data base of sound power levels;
- developing a methodology for the in situ study of the acoustic characteristics of materials (principally the absorption factor for internal propagation) used in the steel industry.
This methodology will be validated and then applied for the purpose of carrying out insulation studies in an industrial environment.
