Objective
The aim of the research project was to establish technical means of reducing
- the number of accidents and physical injuries
- the physical stress
- the noise emission level.
in the feeder area and during the manual feeding-in of round steel bars.
This can only be achieved by stopping the manual feeding-in of steel bars. Theoretical concepts of an automatic separation had to be tested in everyday production. For this a prototype system was to be constructed. The aim was to be the separation of man and machinery in the workplace.
At the beginning preliminary experiments for the separation of uneven bars were carried out. The most important findings are as follow:
- separation crosswise to the longitudinal lie of the bars is not recommended as, due to the degree of disorganisation of the bars in the bundle, the release of a single bar from the bundle is not possible
- bars can be separated easily from the bundle by extraction in the longitudinal direction
- by extracting the bars in the longitudinal direction high forces of separation can be fed into the bars without the risk of bending them
- in order to increase the accessibility of the bars to gripping them in the bundle the front end of the bar has to be separated (e.g. by spreading the bundle)
- sliding movements of bars are preferable to a falling movement (noise reduction)
On the basis of these findings solutions were developed for the identification of the front end of a bar, respectively for the separation of such, so that it might be gripped securely and separated. The feasibility of the different solutions was studied and evaluated in field tests. The most suitable solutions were then combined, respectively expanded until the optimal solution was found.
Krupp Stahl AG produces mainly high-grade structural steel, tool steel and high-alloy special steel, which are rolled to semi-finished products and steel bars, at its mill in Siegen. During the ensuing heat treatments all usual processes are carried out. Uneven round sections with diameters ranging from about 20 mm to 105 mm and a length of between 2.6 m and 9 m are finished.
Depending on the heat treatments carried out the round steel bars are differently warped. During the feed-in process the employees have to separate the uneven bars manually and feed them into the straightening machine. The danger of accident is very great at this point.
At present there is no functioning system for the automatic separation and feeding-in of uneven steel bars with an extreme warp.
