Mines rescue communication

Objectif

The proposed project aims to develop person-to-person communication specifically for the Mines Rescue Service. The developments already underway within the Emergency Communications project are acknowledged to have provided an advanced starting point. In this way the work of this project will be essentially directed at overcoming the specific problems of mobile communications for mines rescue. The operational needs of the final system will be established in conjunction with mines rescue personnel. It is the intention to produce a working system that may be tested and evaluated by the Mines Rescue Service within the scheduled duration of the programme.
The results of field tests on prototype units provided better than expected performance. The operationally limiting problem of signal fade near the unterminated end of the trailing wire was partly overcome with the inclusion of a simple termination technique at the fixed end. The ability to link into and out of the trailing wire to within 1 metre of the reel was considered essential after discussions with brigadesmen.

After demonstrations to mines rescue personnel it can be concluded that the experimental system would meet all specified requirements. The three main components of the system, mobile units, base unit and wire reel arrangement, can now be envisaged.
It has been apparent for some time that the communication needs of the Mines Rescue Services are inadequately served. The principal limitation is in establishing voice communications with all rescue team members independent of the underground mine communication systems. The successful outcome of an underground rescue operation depends on exchanging information with the 'forward' team quickly and efficiently. Traditionally Mines Rescue Services have employed signalling keys and cable reels providing only rudimentary point-to-point communications. Such systems are also heavy and inflexible. Attempts have been made to adopt radio systems but have failed because of the limited propagation distances possible in coal mines and the hitherto absence of a full face masks. Mines Rescue Services have expressed a requirement for a light weight communications system that could be deployed in any situation underground with the ability to talk to all members of the rescue team.

The proposed project is intended to develop further the 'guided propagation' arrangement used in the ECSC Emergency Communication Project 7262/34/255/08. Here propagation is achieved by inductively coupling signals from battery powered base units into power cables (although other conducting members can be used). By using a dedicated lightweight high-tensile wire the arrangement offers extended transmission lengths and a path marker for rescue teams when traversing smoked filled roadways. For further communications with individual members of the rescue team a radio system will be developed and integrated with the guided propagation systems.

Programme(s)
