Objective
In the last few years, new sensors for measuring oxygen concentrations in air have appeared on the market. They are particularly suitable for use in portable instruments because they are light and compact, operate by natural diffusion and consume little or in some cases no electricity.
The purpose of this project was to determine how suitable they are for use in mines, in terms of their cost, maintainability and metrological characteristics.
A comparative evaluation of four of each of the types of sensor was carried out in the laboratory.
The sensors were then instrumented and installed in a fixed position in a mine, where measurements were taken for five months.
The findings of the laboratory and pit trials favour the CITY TECHNOLOGY C/2 electrochemical sensors.
Three types of sensor which could in principle be suitable for mines were selected:
- a solid electrolyte sensor (using zirconium oxide) from PEKLY (France);
- a liquid electrolyte sensor from CITY TECHNOLOGY (United Kingdom), now also made by OLDHAM-FRANCE;
- two liquid electrolyte sensors from GS STORAGE BATTERY (Japan).
The intention was also to test a new paramagnetic sensor which differed from others of its kind by its compactness and its ability to operate by diffusion, without a pump, with a satisfactory response time. However, this sensor is still at the experimental stage; its inventor was unable to provide one and has still not marketed it.
