Objective
In its opencast mining operations, the Centre/Midi Area of the Charbonnages de France (HBCM) forms spoil tips which are very high (100 to 250 m). While there is no doubt as to the long-term stability of these tips in their final condition, technical and economic constraints make it necessary to apply much lower safety factors while they are being formed.
Without continuous and reliable monitoring, there may be a threat to the safety of the plant (spoil spreaders, trucks or bulldozers) and its operating crews.
The Carmaux Group, in cooperation with the BRGM, is currently designing and implementing a method for placing clay/sand and sandstone/shale materials or a mixture thereof by means of spreaders and arrangements for tip drainage.
The HBCM, in conjunction with the CERCHAR, proposes to:
1) extend this type of study to cover the different types of materials and plant used for forming the tips;
2) develop continuous monitoring systems which will be reliable, automatic, fail-safe, movable and suitable for rapid installation, allowing remote alarm actuation in case of danger.
