Objective
1. Development of a standardised technique to measure the strength, capacity, range of movement and other related parameters of the back and abdominal musculature.
2. Qualitative analysis of stressful postures.
3 .Development of a criterion to assess the stress tolerance of the back.
4. Refinement of this criterion to predict the occurrence of back complaints in workers.
The study population comprises a group of 300 steelworkers identified by a preliminary survey as particularly exposed to stress affecting the spinal column.
This stress will be evaluated both qualitatively (through a questionnaire) and quantitatively (through continuous monitoring).
Quantitative analysis of the back musculature will be carried out using an isodynamic method.
Out of the large volume of data collected, the most suitable parameters for supplying information on mechanical muscular stress will be selected .
METHODS AND MEANS BY WHICH THE AIMS ARE TO BE ACHIEVED
The Nordic questionnaire will be used for the qualitative stress analysis. Stressful postures will be assessed by recording the movements and positions of the body.
The isodynamic method (ISO station B- 200) will be used to describe the various aspects relating to the back (strength, strength-speed radio, capacity, peak torque, strength discrimination, etc.).
