Study of suspended particulate matter at work places in steelmaking shops and blast furnaces: quantification of the soluble fraction

Objective

The aim of the research is to contribute to the evalluation of the health risk for workers in the iron and steel industry by examining the solubility in biological fluids (saliva and hydrochloric solutions) of airborne particles. The results will identify the intake and absorption routes for soluble materials and any toxic risks. It will then be possible to tailor the technical and medical action to the actual risk conditions that are to be prevented.

The exposure of the various groups of workers will be related to three distinct fractions in the pollutant dust:

- the fraction formed by iron oxides, chromium, manganese, calcium, magnesium, etc;
- the organic fraction including PAH and graphite particulates;
- dust mass originating in the slag and the various additives used.

The study of the soluble phase of the particulate matter will be followed by work to determine the soluble ion phase and the study of redox chemical auilibriums. The health risk will be determined on the basis of the factors affecting the coefficients of solubility.

METHODS AND MEANS BY WHICH THESE AIMS ARE TO BE ACHIEVED

The particulate matter willl be selected according to grain size using in-situ and individual samplers. Physical/chemical analysis will be based on atomic absorption methods, calorimetry and X-ray diffraction. The hydrocarbons will be identified by gas chromatography. At the same time the biological monitoring of secretions will be established for the purpose of monitoring individual exposure.
