Report containing the educational framework and instructions of the 33 ”Photonics Workshops” developed (s’ouvre dans une nouvelle fenêtre)Report containing the educational framework and instructions of the 33 ”Photonics Workshops” developed. The “Photonics Workshops” will introduce a variety of fundamental photonics principles that are important to harness photonics properly to understand a wide variety of applications and create new ones. In total 11 different topics of photonics will be covered by the “Photonics Workshops”. The “Photonics Workshops” will be developed by the photonics research organisations in the consortium, working in collaboration with the local pilot Fab Labs. For each of the 11 topics, “Photonics Workshops” will be developed which are dedicated to each of the 3 different target groups: young minds (age 10-14), students (age 15-18), and Young Professionals and Technicians (age 18+). Special attention will be given to positioning the content of these “Photonics Workshops” such that they are appealing to each of the different target groups. Especially for the young minds, a gender-balanced approach will be taken through a multitude of actions, e.g. the choice of the workshop content, how the workshops are organised, and instructions for the coaches. Through these actions we will bridge specific gender challenges with girls such as the general tendency for a lack of self-confidence in science and technology , stereotypes about gender roles , and the contextual approach . This will result in a total collection of 33 appealing ”Photonics Workshops” from which the Fab Labs can make a selection according to the needs and user profiles in their locality.

Report on testing different instrumentation/components (s’ouvre dans une nouvelle fenêtre)The PHABLABS 4.0 project aims as its third general objective to compose photonics toolkits for the Fab Labs to facilitate the use of photonics components as a standard element throughout these innovation hubs. The toolkits will be modular and will be composed of photonics components and/or photonics tools to stimulate innovation in the Fab Labs. For each of the PHABLABS 4.0 “Photonics Workshops”, a package with specific photonics components will be put together such that European Fab Labs interested in giving a particular PHABLABS 4.0 “Photonics Workshop” can easily be provided with the consumables needed for that activity. Also for the “Photonics Challenger Projects” additional photonics components will be made available.

Within the PHABLABS 4.0 project we aim to define and test 11 different inspiring and thought-provoking “Photonics Challenger Projects”, covering different aspects of photonics and with a link to cross-KET technologies. In the framework of the “Photonics Challenger Projects”, the participants will use their own creativity to design, build and test a system that will meet the goals of the “Photonics Challenger Projects”. They will also elaborate and test new ideas and concepts in the cross-KET domain. A particular emphasis will be put on stimulating the participants to develop their ability for thinking “outside-the-box”.
