The WINHOME project is a very innovative concept concerning bringing the Information Superhighway into the home, providing a powerful way to give high quality interactive television (TV), Internet access and video-phone communications via a set-top box or other multi-media server equipment, and flexible home distribution via HIPERLAN products. The multimedia concept is based on wireless non licensed home distribution, using existing standards and benefiting from the work previously carried out on HIPERLAN. Initially the project uses the next generation of digital set-top boxes from Grundig, prototypes of the PCMCIA HIPERLAN products from Dassault Electronique, and various standard components concerning the home multimedia peripherals, all fitted with the FIREWIRE interface. The major experiments involve: characterization of the wireless transmission in a home-like environment; carrying out of simultaneous interactive video transmission, videophone and data transmission (like Internet Web demonstration over a portable personal computer, PC); demonstration of the global service with end user application representatives; real size trials while monitoring customer behaviour. HIPERLAN operates through a 5.2 GHz non licensed band and is characterized by more than 20 Mbps bandwidth on each of 5 collateral channels, a true multimedia networking capability with sophisticated priority management schemes, and a true inter-operability standard for non proprietary products. The platform being built mixes various multimedia technologies and will be a very advanced proof of the concept of comprehensive multimedia applications over HIPERLAN. The multimedia distribution area currently being explored provides the user with wireless links to TV appliances, network computer, etc. A great effort is being made to build efficient stacks of protocol with mobility and quality of service advanced features.
