Objective
Corrosion damages have a major impact on society and economy in terms of injury, environmental damage and financial costs. Developing quantitative models to reliably predict the dynamic performance of the surface of engineering materials is still an open challenge.
The scientific and technical issue of this project is to demonstrate that it is possible to combine local electrochemical techniques to go further in the probing and modelling of galvanic and chemical processes involved during pitting of engineering materials at the microscopic scale and to validate the model proposed. In the first part of the project (micro-imaging of galvanic processes), the Microcapillary Electrochemical Cell technique will be used to measure the individual behaviour of single phases and heterogeneities on a well-controlled microstructure of stainless steel and to determine the chemical species emitted during dissolution processes by cyclic voltametry of trapped electrolyte. The Scanning Vibrating Electrode Technique will be used to image the current distribution above and around pitting sites on the same microstructure.
This novel approach will provide quantitative data concerning the electrochemical behaviour and the current distribution on an engineering material at the microscale. Microstructural criteria leading to significant damages of these materials will be then proposed. In the second part of the project, modelling of electrochemical processes will be performed using a finite element method (FEMLAB). The novel aspects of the method proposed are both to mesh the real microstructure including all the heterogeneities and to implement boundary and initial conditions that will be deduced from local measurements described above.
The major impacts of this project will be to transfer knowledge and expertise in order to promote the development of technical platforms in Poland and to support the integration of these centres in existing or future European networks.
