Summary of the context and overall objectives of the project

In the ICEBREAKER Proof of Concept (PoC) we have explored the industrial applicability and potential for commercialization of the computational technology developed in the SAFECON Advanced Grant project (www.cimne.com/safecon) for the study of the navigation of a ship in ice-covered waters and the determination of the ice drag of the vessel and the ice-induced resistance on the vessel hull.
In the ICEBREAKER PoC we have moved the SAFECON software technology towards the initial steps of an innovation process leading to a new simulation software adequate for studying the ice-ship interaction problem. The SAFECON software is applicable for modelling icy-waters incorporating ice particles of different sizes, the multi-fracture of ice induced by the interaction with the hull of a vessel cruising in these waters and the computation of the forces induced by the ice-ship interaction on the cruising vessel.
The software technology addressed in the ICEBREAKER PoC will provide naval architects with an innovative simulation tool useful for the design of commercial ships that are able to operate in seas where ice is frequent.
