The research is concerned with the prototyping of models of computer integrated manufacture (CIM) systems using advanced information technology tools. The major theme of the discussions has emerged as 'Design Coordination for Concurrent Engineering'. A definition of design coordination has been adopted as 'a high level concept of the planning, scheduling, representation, decision making and control of the product development with respect to time, tasks, resources and design aspects'. This is being used as a unifying concept for several research areas, each examining different aspects of this central theme. These areas are seen as central to successful implementation of concurrent engineering. These different areas are: an architecture for design coordination (this is directed at the development of a generic open software framework to support design coordination, and will provide a framework for the other 3 research areas); life cycle modelling of products (this is concerned with the product model throughout the product life cycle); assembly automation (this focuses on assembly issues in concurrent engineering, in particular the integration of product design with the design of assembly systems and tools); reuse of engineering experience (this addresses the design activity from the innovation perspective and is concerned with developing a framework and methodologies to ensure a well informed balance between reuse and creativity).
