Objectif
The first phase of the Special Action for Microelectronics in Spain (GAME), launched in September 1990, has already involved more than 60 Spanish organisations, including 38 who were introduced to microelectronics for the first time.
The objectives of the second phase are to further increase the number of companies participating and to develop trans-national co-operative links for those already involved. This latter objective will bring a new aspect to the Action through:
- establishing training seminars given by experts from the Community
- transferring technology results from existing ESPRIT projects
- placing Spanish industrial researchers in European organisations for short periods
- increasing the level of co-operation of Spanish centres of excellence with their European counterparts.
These measures are designed to increase the ability of Spanish organisations to cooperate and contribute to Community R&D activities, to draw on existing European results and resources, and to acquire the know-how to enter into co-operative commercial agreements with European partners.
To achieve these objectives three lines of action will be followed:
- ASIC demonstration activities: The industrially focused and demand-driven approach established in the original GAME Action will be retained. Priority will be given to companies with little or no previous experience as well as to those with a need to master new technologies and design approaches. The scope of the technologies addressed will be extended, and to complement the demand-driven nature of the Action, some resources will be earmarked for technology-push activities based on field-programmable logic array (FPGA) devices.
- Sensor technology and applications: The projects launched in 1990 have stimulated a strong interest for further work targeted on applications in environmental management, medicine, transport, food production, etc. The new work will provide a coherent framework for otherwise fragmented industrial research in these areas.
- Technology transfer, training and transnational contacts will be fostered by:
. creating a series of workshops and seminars where Spanish industry and researchers will be exposed to expertise drawn from other European industries, centres of excellence and ESPRIT projects
. encouraging, and partly funding, Spanish industrial researchers to work for short periods (3-6 months) in complementary European organisations in order to gain and transfer specifically needed skills and know-how
. reinforcing Spanish centres of excellence by enabling them to acquire advanced technology know-how through co-operation with other European centres of excellence
. encouraging Spanish industry to have staff seconded to Spanish centres of excellence for advanced technology training.
