Cohesive zone model for mode I and mode II delamination (plane stress)

Numerical implementation of cohesive zone model for mode I and mode II delamination (plane stress) with detailed R-curves and demonstration of how individual R-curves for adjacent layers can promote parallel cracks and crack arrest. The implementation of the model and its use is presented in a memo.

Fatigue model based on a cohesive law

A computational model to simulate fatigue driven crack growth with focus on reasonable computaional cost. The model will be calibrated and validated with experimental data from subtask 3.2.1. The formulation, implementation, use and validation will be described in a memo.

Advanced algorithms for damage detection from strain measurements

Starting with PCA as baseline algorithm for processing strain data, a review on the latest advances in data analysis methods will be done, and those more promising will be implemented. The deliverable will be a Report summarizing main algorithms, and a comparison of results.

Micromechanical model for fibre peel-off and pull-out

A micromechanical simulation model/method to predict the effect of fibre configuration and matrix properties on the cohesive traction - separation law. Based on a representative volume with one or a few fibres bridging two crack faces. Statistical treatment of results generated are used to predict the traction separation law for larger ensembles of fibres. The delivery will be a memo describing the simulation method and the results generated and appropriate results data in ASCII format

LCA database of environmental impacts to inform material selection process

LCA database of environmental impacts to inform material selection process. An inventory will be created of the component materials which will form the basis of the composites. This will be informed by the use of background data from the ELCD and Ecoinvent databases. Where partners have already conducted their own LCAs, the information will also be incorporated into the database, where this is compatable. Where there are data gaps, these will be filled by conducting searches of the scientific literature and any published environmental product declarations. Where this is not possible, modelling will be used. All of this information will be incorporated into an excel spreadsheet. A report will accompany this spreadsheet.

DACOMAT project website

The website will be the main external communication tool developed in DACOMAT and will be implemented and updated all along the project duration. The website will publish on a regular basis the current status of the project and main results obtained, in a popularized format, in addition to newsletters that will also be published online. The website will also offer an agenda for coming events where DACOMAT partners will be present

Final LCA and LCCA report based upon selected technologies in demonstrators

Final LCA and LCCA report based upon selected technologies in demonstrators When the final materials choices have been made for the demonstrators it will then be possible to finalise the LCA studies Based upon the environmental exposure and performance of the composites it will be possible to make informed estimates of the likely behaviour in service The LCA and LCCA study will incorporated the whole of the life cycle and include end of life scenarios regarding reuse or ultimate disposal The output for this deliverable will be in the form of a report

Interim LCA and LCCA report based upon technology selection and modelled processes

Interim LCA and LCCA report based upon technology selection and modelled processes. Based upon the materials selection by the DACOMAT partners and studies of the composites, it will be possible to model the whole life of the materials at a coarse level using both LCA and LCCA. This modelling will involve the use of different scenarios to identify ‘hot-spots’ and allow for a sensitivity analysis to be conducted. This information can be used to ‘fine-tune’ the materials decisions before the demonstrators are made. A preliminary baseline study of conventional technologies will also be conducted at this time. The deliverable will be in the form of a report.

Report on the mixed mode interface cohesive laws using a new test method

A new microscale testing method based on single fibres being peeled of a matrix surface in scanning electron microscope will be developed. Various peeling angles will be tested and details of the displacement field of the fracture process zone where the fibre detaches will be documented and used for the determination of a microscale mixed mode cohesive law. The delivery will be a report describing the test specimen design, manufacturing testing fixtures, testing procedures and results for 1-2 different fibre/matrix interface treatments.

Report on mode II interface cohesive law using an improved single fibre fragmentation test

The state-of-the-art single fibre fragmentation test method will be improved to extract additional information to be applied in recent advanced micromechanical models able to separate the interface fracture energy from the interface friction. Mode II fracture energy will be measured and be used in WP1. The delivery will be a memo describing the improved evaluation method and the results generated.

Characterization of fracture mechanisms, fibre bridging and correlation to AE activity

Report on the correlation of AE signals with the modified fracture properties. Physical characteristics of the fracture mechanism relating to fracture resistance, such as the degree of fibre bridging in a particular fracture process zone, can be inferred via differing AE waveform characteristics from cracks with a high or low degree of fibre bridging.
