Periodic Reporting for period 2 - PRESTIGE (Design-driven integration of innovative PRinted functional matErialS into inTeractive hIgh-end and fashion consumer Goods addressing tomorrow’s societal challEnges)

The PRESTIGE project aims at bringing together design-thinking innovation strategies with advanced printed functional materials developments (electroactive fluorinated polymers, photoactive materials, electroactive organic moeities, fluorinated relaxor terpolymers, tailor-made polymers for overmoulding and organo-mineral coating) and integration to demonstrate high-end interactive and aesthetics final products at TRL7 tackling tomorrow’s societal challenges.
Five demonstrators will be developed and disseminated. Three business cases : (i) a haptic steering wheel for enhanced driving-experience (answering safe mobility challenge), (ii) energy harvesting and storage capacities for wearables (answering health, well-being and fashion challenges), (iii) e-plastic labels and oleophobic coatings for a more sustainable multi-use packaging (answering waste management: a major environmental challenge). Moreover, an artistic case (iv) to reach a wide audience of societal stakeholders and a design showcase (v) to increase awareness of designers about new materials.
In PRESTIGE a consortium of 16 partners all along the value chain from designers, material and process scientists, material suppliers, manufacturers, systems integrators, end-users to artists and societal stakeholders has been set-up to stand as a unique European reference in the future fostering design-driven innovation in creative industries and beyond, by promoting their achievements through an SME-oriented cluster of excellence.
Here are the main conclusion of the action:
-PDR worked closely with designers at Wertel Oberfell and academics at the University of Glasgow to develop a structured design process. Design and empathy workshops, urban living visits to cities, user-led generative and prototype testing workshops, an artistic workshop circular economy assessment of products and materials and design team workshops formed the basis of the collaborative process which has informed the development of the five prototypes developed in PRESTIGE.
- AUTOLIV and CEA built the final prototype to show that piezoelectric components can be integrated into a steering wheel and used as a novel driver-vehicle interface. The final prototype could potentially be installed in a real vehicle. We develop a table-top demonstrator so it can be showcased to a larger audience.
VTT and POLAR finalized two energy harvesting wristband demos, laminated and overmoulded modular wristbands with energy monitoring and data transfer modules.
IPC and ALBEA have developed the final prototype by combining the NFC functionality with the oleophobic surface coating in the cosmetic packaging demonstrator.
-An artistic demonstrator – An interactive installation autonomously powered by printed photovoltaics and batteries – has been developed. It was shown at the Experimenta Fair 2020, which was visited by more than 7,000 people.
A design showcase – ESUB, a concept for a smart cycle helmet powered with printed photovoltaics and featuring printed piezo-electric audio technologies – was developed. Wertel Oberfell ensured that it featured in DDWs online show. Wertel Oberfell also showcased ESUB at Munich Creative Business Week in March 2021, which had an attendance of 35,000 online visitors. A video of ESUB has also been produced

PRESTIGE’s work on exploitation focused on a selected number of the 14 key exploitable results (KERs) identified in the earlier work. As the project has progressed, and the maturity of certain technologies has increased, five of these KERs were selected to develop a more formal business plan for future commercialization and these five business plans form the basis of the second PRESTIGE Exploitation Plan.
The selection took into account the following elements:
-A focus on SMEs and large industrials, though research and technology organisations were not excluded.
-The technological progress during the project
-A desire, where possible, to integrate partners covering all of the three business cases, with a balance between the specific business case and wider commercialization opportunities.
-A clear pathway to commercialization, either specifically aligned to one of the three business cases, and/or to adjacent markets.
On the basis of these criteria, and through discussions with the organisations concerned, the following five KERs were selected for business plan development:
1.KER 2:Fabrication of printed piezoelectric actuators
2.KER 3: Printing electroactive components - integration of haptics on plastic parts
3.KER 7: Sports wristband with integrated energy harvesting and storage
4.KER 8: Transparent conductive and biocidal materials
5.KER 9: Integrated NFC-chip solutions

Dissimeniation actions through Artistic and Design case have been described above

The work on conductive materials, piezoelectric inks, photo-active materials, conductive inks, injection molding trials, transparency of hydrophobic coatings main results are:
-Optimization of electroactive polymer and inks for CEA samples.
-Polynitroxydes and polyviologene based electroactive polymers were synthesized and studied at lab scale before being produced at pilot scale in order to provide enough products for the formulation of slurries for screen printing trials and development of organic printed batteries.
-Formulation of water-base, printable and fluorine free supercapacitor active ink optimized for screen-printing.

Several processes associated with materials have been improved to develop new components :
-printed actuators for haptic components, OPV, conductive lines, organic batteries and supercapacitors
-overmolding and thermoforming processes
-electronic components for ultra-low power chip-platform for sensing, sensors processing and contactless wireless communications

Validation of new materials and manufacturing processes associated with the innovative design strategy have been done:
-BC (i): Executed simulator experiment with 1st prototype to identify best piezo placement and vibration characteristics to ensure tactile feedback is perceived on a steering wheel;
-BC (i): Executed simulator experiment with 2nd prototype to evaluate the effects of haptic warnings delivered through the steering wheel in critical situations;
-BC (i): Executed test-track experiment with 3rd prototype to evaluate the effects of a steering wheel with touch input and haptic feedback on driver behavior and preference;
-BC (i): Designed graphical user interface that mimics an automotive cluster to be used with the final prototype;
-BC (i): Designed electronic board that reads touch inputs and actuates vibrating elements to be used in the final prototype;
-BC (i): Completed the integration of the printed piezoelectric components in the steering wheel for the final prototype.
-BC (ii): Energy harvesting wristband demonstrator with data collecting, storage and transferring electronics;
-BC (ii): Monitor the harvested energy of a wristband in indoor and outdoor condition and evaluate the energy production with a 24/7 user profile;
-BC (ii): Development of a modular platform for energy harvesting and storage wristband;
-BC (ii): overmoulding each modular components (supercapasitor, organic battery, organic solar cells, NFC+chip) for the demonstrator;
-BC (ii): R2R bonding and assembling processes were used for chip assembling onto NFC circuit
-BC (ii): Complete a modular energy harvesting and storage wristband demonstrator with overmoulded OPV and NFC circuitry.
