Evaluation of influence of corrosion on the mechanical behaviour at room temperature and elevated temperatureThis report will review the relation between corroded microstructure and thermomechanical behaviour of refractory lining The corroded multilayer refractory lining will be divided into representative parts with different corrosion extents zones Received information will allow to settle relationships between corrosion extent and thermomechanical properties
Model of the non-linear behaviour of masonry at high temperatureThis report will gather the numerical results regarding the nonlinear behaviour of masonry subsystem scale It uses the data from the experimental thermomechanical campaigns and uses it to calibrate advanced numerical multiphysics models
Mechanical data for the finite element simulationThis report will review the measurements obtained on the studied materials for mechanical properties Mechanical data are required as input data for the thermomechanical simulation This includes elastic material properties like Youngs modulus and Poisson ratio but also the thermal expansion and fracture mechanical data like the tensile strength and the specific fracture energy
Model of the multi-physic behaviour of refractory at high temperatureThis report will describe the set of equations constitutive equations transport simplified chemical reactions that can describe the evolution of the mechanical behaviour linked to refractory corrosion and that can be numerically implemented in a finite element code
Critical material and lining (geometry, layout…) parameters for the structure's lifespanThe numerical model of the industrial structure will allow to change some parameters the material of bricks and mortar the design of masonries and structure or the joint thickness for example The influence of each parameter on the structure lifespan will be evaluated This report will review the most important parameters that has be determined and optimised to increase the structure lifespan
Non-linear homogenization methodsAt high temperature refractory bricks and mortars have a nonlinear behaviour Task 32 To obtain a material that has a behaviour equivalent to that of the masonry nonlinear homogenisation methods are used They will be adapted to the case of refractory masonries and applied to the materials used in large industrial structures This report will review these different aspects
First strain fields from laboratory testingThis report will review full field strain measurement, optical techniques and associated experimental protocols which has been optimised either to target low strain level quantification or limit the degradation of the accuracy due to harsh environment (very high temperature).
Thermomechanical characterization of refractory microstructures finishedThis report will review the microstructure evolution of sample during loading observed by optical or SEM using a dedicated device UNILIM RWTH MUL The recently developed 2PDIC routine will especially allow to accurately monitor microcracks network evolution during microwedge splitting bending or Brazilian tests This will comfort DEM results from WP3 and will help to build a better understanding of the relationship between a voluntary preestablished microcracks network by CTE mismatch between different constituents and the ability of the material to develop a RCurve behaviour
Report about fundamental corrosion mechanisms and influencing factorsThis report will review the factors that have a critical effect on materials under operating conditions This document constitute a starting point in order to build a better understanding of the relation between thermomechanical properties evolution and the different stages of corrosive degradation The basis of the corrosion mechanisms and its influence on selected properties of the material will be detailed
Thermomechanical characterization of subsystems finishedThis report will gather the data obtained in the different experimental campaigns on the thermomechanical behaviour of refractory masonry at subsystem scale It includes the experimental campaigns performed in masonry wallets at UMINHO and RHI
Mid-term dissemination and annual presentation and reportThe ESRs will present their work to ATHOR members every 6 months and to the FIRE members every year at the FIRE general annual meeting. They will present reports with the same periodicity for this two audiences. Industrial seminars will be organized for the ESRs and academic members every year, in phase with the FIRE annual meeting. These seminars will be open to FIRE members. All the document will be available on line.
Model of the laboratory pilotsUsing the models of masonries developed in Task 34 the tests performed on laboratory pilots Task 44 are modelled numerically with a finite element software The comparison with the experimental results should allow to validate the different masonry models This report will review these different aspects
Input for the simulation of thermal and mechanical behaviour of jointsThis report will gather the experimental data regarding the thermal and mechanical behaviour of joints tested at UORL and UMINHO The data from this report will be used in the numerical simulations at WP3
Comparison between the methods for masonry computationsThis report will present the comparison between the different modelling approaches used to simulate the thermomechanical behaviour of refractory masonry under these extreme conditions with and without homogenization approaches
Devices for mechanical characterisation at laboratory scale are readyThis report will review the current state of the testing device which has to be developed for detailed investigations of the fracture process in the SEM or stereo microscope.
Full database with thermal material properties and publication of some resultsThis report will review the measurements obtained on the studied materials for coefficient of thermal expansion CTE heat capacity Cp and thermal conductivity If the measurement of CTE in the all temperature range from 20C up to 1500C is quite easy to measure the access to accurate values of Cp and are still a challenging topic today So the report will aim here a to establish the best practice for thermal properties measurement on insulating materials b characterize Cp and on selected commercial refractories and model materials for numerical modelling
In-situ measurements on industrial steel ladle finishedThis report will review the measurements of strain fields thermal fields displacement fields and localized displacements in a full scale industrial steel ladle These insitu measurements will give adequate and sufficient data to calibrate and validate the developed numerical macromodels TATASTEEL UMINHO The obtained results will be used to validate advanced numerical models at macroscale developed within WP3 allowing proper sensitivity analysis to identify better lining layouts and optimization at industrial scale
Devices ready for thermo-physical properties characterisationThis report will assess and compare different already available experimental techniques for evaluating thermal conductivity diffusivity and heat capacity and if necessary will present the current development of new dedicated devices
Methodology for temperature measurements in industrial linings is readyThis report will review the techniques based on classical thermocouples and infrared cameras and will state about the optimised accuracy which can be obtained A review will also be given on the development of ambitious setups at laboratory scale as well as insitu devices for measurement on industrial linings in service
Thermomechanical characterization of 3D pilot model finishedThis report will gather the data obtained in the different experimental campaigns on the thermomechanical behaviour of the developed 3D pilot scaled model
Discrete element model of a typical refractory microstructureThis report will review the development of numerical tools based on the discrete element method DEM for investigation of relationships between microstructure and thermomechanical properties of model materials including debonding thermomechanical coupling crackclosure and anisotropic behaviours The thereby developed virtual numerical lab will enable virtual tests as tensile dilatometry fracture mechanics or thermal shock for virtual characterizations aiming on proposition of simple laws to optimize the microstructure design that drives thermomechanical strength for model refractories
Models of the industrial structureUsing the models of masonries developed in Task 34 an industrial structure steel ladle that contains refractory masonries will be built using a finite element software In this report the results will be compared to insitu measurements on a real steel ladle Task 45
Description of microstructures and evolutionsThis report will review the results of microstructure investigations by XRD HTXRD SEM EDS EBSD of the studied materials in their different states including corrosion in order to build a better understanding of the relationships existing between microstructure and its evolution and thermomechanical properties
Thermomechanical characterization of refractory materials finishedThis report will review the thermomechanical behaviour of refractory materials at a sample scale brick under cyclic thermal gradient A dedicated device has been recently developed in the framework of another European program SFERA2 to monitor by acoustic emission and DIC the behaviour of a cylindrical disc 10 to 15 cm in diameter subjected to a concentrated solar irradiation solar furnace at PROMES laboratory Obtained results will be used to test the ability of refractory material to sustain thermal shocks in relation with the design of their microstructure and to validate preliminary FEM results from WP3 at sample scale
At least 3 reviewed paper and 3 communications in international congress per ESRPartners will prepare and publish high quality journals book chapters peerreviewed conferences whenever possible using Green or Gold standard openness Joint position papers on Refractories capabilities and strategy at the EU level will be disseminated Reviewed papers and communications will be available on line
The website is created. It describes the project and gives the news. Each ESR position is described. All internet documents linked to the project are put on the cloud of the project.
ATHOR E-learning toolTools and a platform will be provided to the ESRs to communicate and to learn. In the e-learning portal, literature is provided, videos about laboratory work and industrial applications will be available. ESRs have to pass tests/quizzes and can communicate via a forum. This report will review these activities.
A new scientific exhibition will be created on ceramic science and refractory research issues to promote scientific studies and careers in the refractory field among young people and the general public
All ESRs RecruitedAdvertising will start as soon as a start date for the project is known. All vacancies are advertised and are open to all suitable candidates from all countries. The Recruitment and Skill Progress Committee (RSPC) establishes well-defined recruitment criteria to be used by all partners and ensure fairness of selection, in accordance with the Human Resources Strategy for Researchers (HSR4R). This is detailed in section 3.2.4. All ESRs will be recruited for a period of 36 months for a PhD program at one or more Universities. ESRs will be asked to spend 4 months minimum at their host institution before undertaking secondment. This report will review recruitment activities after last ESR arrival.

Detailed programs of each training eventsTraining of ESRs in specific key research and complementary skills will be delivered through research training courses (RTC) and complementary skills workshops (CSW), specific ESRs conferences session (C), site visits (SV). All consortium members will contribute to this task. Detailed programmes of each training events will be provide in advance 1 month prior to the session.
Posters, PowerPoint of ESRs for their presentation at the international conferences and workshopsAs part of their professional training, ESRs will have the responsibility to organize and chair sessions at an international conference. ESRs will be exposed to a range of interdisciplinary approaches to develop broader knowledge. This report will review these activities for each ESR.
